In addition to what has been stated, RJ needed a way to tie Rand to the Aiel culture. Rand has to play both savior and destroyer to them, and the reader needs to see some kind of connection (other than blood) to believe that they would follow him. At the same time, he cannot be too connected or we would have no sympathy for those that chose not to follow his lead, and they likely are the ones he has saved.
Don't forget also, that an added bonus of the foursome, storywise, is that it brings the girls together as well. Three girls that have little to nothing in common except Rand.
