5) A last throwaway line says that the story begins with Rand walking down the mountain to have a long overdue chat with somebody. Obviously, this is Egwene, and I'm deeply peeved this is the first chapter.
I don't entirely understand why Rand WOULD do this? I mean how does he even know that Elaida is still not in control of the WT.
I doubt very much it was Egwene. She was in the Tower reading reports. Where would she have the time or motivation to go out to the Mountain having more than she can handle getting the WT back together?
However, in that final chapter of TGS someone was missing. Gawyn was nowhere to be found, having shadowed Egwene previously. My guess is that he went out to the mountain and met Rand - too much foreshadowing in TGS towards that encounter and I always figured they'd come to a showdown sooner or later.

Everyone seems to think Rand will talk to Egwene, but a male channeler also makes sense

No Elayne hopefully, but again it looks like Egwene has everything fall in her lap

After his COT review, a less then gushing review isn't great

But he is specifically trying to avoid being overly fanboyish BECAUSE of that CoT review. *NM*
