Yes, they "tried everything", but as long as the taint was still there, it was impossible to get rid of the problem.
It'd be like trying to cure HIV by replacing the body's immune cells. Sure it'd solve the problem that HIV created...but HIV would still be there and would just reinfect the body's new immune cells.
