I put the blame more on Team Jordan. Gher Send a noteboard - 03/02/2011 06:52:42 PM
It's their job to keep continuity straight. They are the ones that knew Jordan's plans, all the little things he was building up, his writing process, the things he intended. They wouldn't have known everything, but they know more than Sanderson.

Since Sanderson writes by POV, putting scenes in from other characters would be a tricky business. Knowing some of the rabid fans, being off by a day or two, or even a few hours, will set off theories and predictions about the time-delay in the visions, or outrage that he got it wrong.

Sanderson could have stopped writing strictly by POV, but I'm sure we would have lost characterization and the feeling of distinct voices, something that isn't always abundant anyway.

As for your point about the two types of readers, I know what you mean. Geography and movement are a large part of my mental idea of a story, and it can cause a strange discomfort when a character suddenly moves or looks left to something I thought was on their right.

I could be wrong. Maybe my expectations were just a lot lower for the AMOL books. All I know is that I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of precision and subtlety, willing to do more work to figure out the timeline (though TOM required more of that than I expected), if it means I get to read the books. I might be cutting Sanderson too much slack, but since I don't know what went on during the making of the book, behind the scenes, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and accept what comes for the most part.
