so, obviously, touching on the topic of Taim is risky. that much i've noticed while lurking about. ^_^;

but, as far as i can recall, i don't really remember this particular take on the guy coming up.

namely, is it possible that Taim is not a dark friend, nor a forsaken in disguise (moridin is the popular one i believe, since demandred was debunked), but just some guy who's a big ol jerk?

in LoC, Ch2, as Rand is about to first meet Mazrim Taim, Rand has an LTT thought:
Lews Therin rose up in a frenzy in his head. Sammael and Demandred hated me, whatever honors I gave them. The more honors, the worse the hate, until they sold their souls and went over. Demandred especially.


it seems a parallel is being set up here. but at the same time, maybe a bit of a red herring too.

when Bashere seems uncertain of Taim's identity, Taim talks about 'something' he did to four of Bashere's buddies:
"I hear you hid what happened to Musar and Hachari and their wives." The mockery was gone; he was just relating what had happened now. "They shouldn't have tried to kill me under a parley flag. I trust you found them good places as servants? All they'll really want to do now is serve and obey; they won't be happy otherwise.--"

Sounds an awful lot like compulsion to me. Something, it seems, Rand missed. in Rand's defense, he was still fairly new at channeling at this point, even with Asmodean's teaching and he was probably pretty distracted with Taim at this time anyway.

so, we come now to the reason why there's a ToM tag on this post; the whole 13x13 theory re: Tarna and Mezar.

is it possible that they just have Taim's particular brand of compulsion on them?

of course, this doesn't really account for the dreamspike at the Black Tower. i suppose Moridin just put it there for fits and giggles, but that's a pretty weak guess. especially since there are only 2 dreamspikes and only one of which Moridin can use.
