I've noticed that quite a few here/wotmania have not been big fiction (fantasy) readers Larry Send a noteboard - 11/10/2012 05:48:02 AM
But over the last year or so I've picked up a few Fantasy novels out of curiosity. RJ is certainly a better story teller than most of what I've seen out there, even though he rambles. I'm going to re-read GRRM this winter after AMOL ... I read the first 3 books of his series years ago and enjoyed it, but got lost after his huge gaps between books. My gut tells me GRRM will end up being the better series in most ways. But WOT will always be my favorite fantasy series... If only for sentimentality sake.

When I was younger, I thought that was dismaying. Now that I'm a bit older, I just guess there's something about the series that appeals to those who want something between generic D&D and something truly challenging/weird.

That being said, when I read epic fantasies, I tend to favor Andrzej Sapkowski (in the Spanish translation as opposed to the incomplete Engligh translation) and the Erikson/Esslemont Malazan novels.

But these days, I read much more poetry and realist fiction than I do speculative fiction. Tastes changes with age, perhaps.
