it's still quite clear that BS doesn't have much character empathy, at least not in the sense of taking well established characters and building on their archetypes. BS started from the beginning with mat as cartoonish buffoon and only worked in his other compelling traits as an afterthought IMHO. i didn't find mat's character *that* far off in aMoL, but it still wasn't *Mat*
