I don't think she made the wrong choice at all, Sidious. She may have been lying, of course, but judging from her personality and from her speech, I think we can assume that she didn't join the Black Ajah out of fear.

Rather, she was offered this choice: Join or die. What purpose would dying serve? Great, she died so she would be "pure." Would that have helped anyone? Through her sacrifice, the Black Ajah was ousted from the white Tower, and at least half of it was killed outright.

Although she very well could have started out as someone who joined to stay alive, and then morphed into a double agent. That doesn't detract from her story any, IMO, but I still think she started out as an infiltrator. She may have preferred to continue her study as an outsider, it is likely less risky, but when given the choice she decided to go for it.
