A link could very possibily eliminate the current problems experienced by Rand and Elayne when it comes to the One Power.

Rand described his seizing of saidin before the Dragonmount scene as "the worst ever." What sort of shape would he be in by the time the Last Battle rolls around?

In addition to overcoming Elayne's difficulties, the buffering effects of a link would make things much safer for her unborn children.
