Clearly Rand's been remembering tricks from Lews Therin. It doesn't show how smart he is, because he didn't discover the trick.

then he must have learnt it at some point and if my guess is right and he is Tamyrlin reborn(the first ever channeler) then he learned how to channel for the first time on his own, so he's super-smart.
