Clearly Rand's been remembering tricks from Lews Therin. It doesn't show how smart he is, because he didn't discover the trick.


He taught the Asha'man this trick back in CoS. He used it to attack and follow Sammael.

IMO this is BS's way of showing the AS contingent something ... men can indeed teach women :)
