Actually, the person being Bound is not the one who channels the Spirit into the rod - another channeler does that. So, when I talked about (and rejected) the idea of Mesaana diverting the flow of Spirit, I meant the other channeler's flow of Spirit. The person being Bound doesn't channel during the process, as I understand it. She just holds the rod and speaks the words.
That's not always true, actually. Egwene wove spirit into the rod herself, as did Romanda, IIRC.
It is very possible that with 300 or so channelers to test, Egwene allowed them to channel spirit into the Rod themselves, rather than channeling for hours on end.
Personally, though, I'd prefer the idea of some kind of inverted glove that prevented Mesaana from touching the OR.
