I think RJ probably wanted her to be considered a 'good' character while still being antagonistic towards Rand, but she comes of as more negative in the books.

Also, in the scene where Egwene doesn't tell Gawyn that Rand wanted revenge for Morgase's death, do you think that was just a case of sheer lazy writing by RJ?

I don't think anyone really hates Egwene,(well except for Cannoli). I do dislike her but it's more because of her views on the WT and her friends. I am sure she will come out smelling of roses in the next 3 books.
