It was one of his wishes. The Foxes set up his marriage because he wished for it inadvertently. He's never really shown much attraction to her, and he's quite fond of even the most average of women.
So far as we know, the Foxes had nothing to do with it. For his three wishes from them he got his new memories, his foxhead medallion, an attempted execution by hanging, and the ashanderei thrown in as a bonus.

It was one of the Snakes from the doorframe in Tear who started it by replying "To marry the Daughter of the Nine Moons" when Mat demanded to learn what his destiny was. So, although there is a strong case for self-fulfilling prophecy, the 'finns didn't actually cause the marriage.


You may be right, but the Snakes at least left him preoccupied with his destiny and convinced that it must come true. Would have looked at Tuon twice had he not known about the prophecy? I honestly don't think so.
