Lan's situation was indeed one with no choice. They had to run from Baerlon, and they had to scare off the Whitecloaks. All this lead to the inn being burned down.

They had to sacrifice the inn to keep the Dragon alive, and since the Dragon was alive, the burned inn was a price worth paying.


Nonsense. The point was to keep Rand out of the Shadow's grasp, so killing him would have achieved that. If they hadn't gone to Baerlon, the inn wouldn't have been destroyed at all either. There were no choices left because they had already made them. Which is exactly the same as the Sandwich War scenario - all the guy wanted was to retrieve his sandwich, but there was no way other than war. He had no choice remaining, because he had already made the choice to employ whatever means were necessary to retrieve it. He had to sacrifice those lives to obtain the sandwich, and since the sandwich was retrieved, the lives were a price worth paying.

That would be true if the saying was:
"The fact that the price was be paid is proof that it is worth paying."

That isn't the case, though.

Yes it is. The fact that the price (martyrdom) had to be paid proves that it was worth paying (his god is real).
The first rule of being a ninja is "do no harm". Unless you intend to do harm, then do lots of harm.
