For the record I agree with your theory. Gher Send a noteboard - 07/03/2010 06:26:45 AM
Basically, I'm just not aware of Jordan changing mechanics from the earlier books, just minor mistakes that were acknowledged, the sort brought up in LitN's Mirror World Switch.

He didn't go back to tweak minor stuff about gateways to TAR and co. That had little impact on the story and bothers mostly the OP geeks. The one "change" RJ made is that later in the series he re used the EOTW travelling style of the prologue and turned that into the True Power way of Travelling, unique to SH and Moridin. Rand's gateway to TAR, or to TG, wasn't changed when he made that choice, perhaps by mistake (that RJ refined something in one place and forgot previous instances that would have needed a tweak is not unique - it happened to him a few times). The whole end sequence is a bit incoherent in the light of the later series, but it can be excused as Rand himself not understanding what he was doing and the 3P limited POV showing the same lack of coherence.

But this was my point. We can't always rely on rules and limitations that are established later in the series. If we did, we'd have to assume that Rand was channeling the True Power when he Traveled at the end of TEOTW. For that reason, Shai'tan's constraints when "snatching" souls doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't have the ability, back when Jordan wrote TEOTW, to grab and torment Kari's soul.

For all we know, Shai'tan started out as a something of a God of Death or the Underworld, who had total power over the grave and the dead, and grew into an Enemy Outsider God.

But it's a fairly academic argument, because the best explanation is that Rand subconsciously summoned Kari, so it doesn't matter if the Dark One originally had the power to grab souls willy-nilly or not.
