If the purpose was to "date" the publication of the novel, "Before the first Earth Day" fails horribley.

1,000,000,000 BC is also "before the first Earth Day" but tehn novel wasn't published then either.

Who was persent at an Earth Day even has no relevance to the Dune novel... Well unledd Mau'dib showed up to it on the back of a worm, but I believe I would have recalled somethign about that in the newspapers of the time.
