I think the fan fiction-ness of it is less an issue of them going to fantasyland and more an issue of them treating it with such little surprise. Dave doesn't pull out of the circle on the first trip because he's afraid or disbelieving; he pulls out because he wants to be able to take his Evidence test on time.
You know, I never thought about this, but the five of them have virtually nothing that marks them as people from the eighties. Granted, their Earth lives are mentioned pretty rarely, but still.
Isn't part of the problem with the first book that bringing contemporary characters (okay, to the extent that one can still consider the eighties contemporary...
