It struck me how different it is to read the book knowing that Sirius is innocent. It changes the whole tenor of it.

I like how the magical spills over into the lives of muggles without them realising, a motif that pops up with increasing frequency in later books.

And Vernon's drawing the connection between Harry and Sirius (well, their hair), suggesting they are in some way alike is nice in retrospect.

Why did Sirius laugh when Pettigrew had killed all those people? It isn't clear whether it is an embellishment added by Stan, but if it isn't ...
I took it to be a hysterical reaction, him having reached a tipping point and suddenly finding the idea of Pettigrew the rat sneaking off to the sewers fantastically funny. But I am not sure. It would be interesting to hear what others thought.


Even in this book we get glimpses of how deeply attached Sirius was to his best friend James. So he just lost his best friend and was about to be blamed for it. It's very easy to understand why he cracked like that
