Re: See my sudden realizations on Snape... (spoilers books 4, 6 & 7)

Oh, yes. I agree entirely. As I said in my reply to your post. It is obvious when you mention it. And it brings more loveliness to the scene. It really is one of my absolute favourite ones.
Yeah, it certainly adds a layer of depth - I'm fairly sure Sirius and Remus are not thinking of Lily at all, and neither is her name mentioned anywhere. Cleverly done on Rowling's part to realize she had to have Snape go around the bend here despite the lack of any reason why, at that point.
Indeed.
Yes. There is a sense of "oh, shit. Did we got too far this time?"
Which can't help with Snape's resentment afterwards. Makes it almost understandable how he treats Harry later on.
Yes. Which would have been exacerbated by the later knowledge that the kids kept him from making the fatal error of bringing an innocent man to his death.
Perhaps turn him into a tea pot and break him?
Hehe.
On that note, I cannot help feeling there is something suspect in the idea that converting animals into objects and objects into animals says something about animals which I am not entirely comfortable with.
You don't think Sirius and Lupin have integrity? Or that they aren't good guys? I don't see en inherent opposition between either and doing stupid things. In fact, Rowling's heroes seem to thrive on doing stupid.
I meant agree about the being wonderfully cool, actually. But since you mention it, it's one thing if "stupid things" entails risking your life, quite another if it entails killing someone else. Killing Peter wouldn't have made them evil perhaps - though Rowling suggests later that it actually might have - but certainly it's not much of an expression if integrity.
No, killing Peter would only be an expression of revenge, grief and that sort of thing. What I meant about integrity was more the different styles of argument employed by Sirius/Lupin and Peter.
I wouldn't stake my life on their willingness to sacrifice themselves for Peter, but I wouldn't rule it out, either. It would be like Harry sacrificing his life for Neville (at this point in the books) -- I could see it happen.
I have to disagree again. Strongly, in fact. Neville is not particularly popular from the start, and yes, Harry isn't really much nicer to him than people in general (or at least not always). But Harry doesn't have any supposed friends who spend their time fawning over him the way we see Peter do over Sirius and James in book five. It annoys him when Colin Creevey engages in hero worship, and it disgusts him to see how Peter acts to Sirius and James in Snape's memory - and how they act to him in return. Peter is not merely some well-meaning but not very competent person like Neville (at first), he's also a brown-noser who has never really belonged in the Marauders gang. I couldn't say for sure Sirius wouldn't die for him, but I don't think he would have. At the very least, if it had been James (or Remus) or Peter, Sirius would have forgotten all about Peter in a split second. But in any case, comparing him to Neville isn't justified, I think.
You are right. Neville wasn't a good example. Colin Creevy might be, though. He is a tag-along.
