He was a philosopher. But not a conventional one. He kind of gave up on academic writing when the examiners did not understand his habilitashonsschrift (or however you write that). Instead he wrote a lot of short ... memory-images? And literary images of cities, essay-style musings and all manner of lovely things. And some academic stuff (he was a part of the Frankfurt school). I love him.

You should read Benjamin and Nietzsche and Mann.

And Mann... I'm discouraged even to think of starting Der Zauberberg.


You could read his short prose. Death in Venice...

They make me want to learn German. So if you already know it, you should profit.

It's more a matter of "speaking a closely related language" than of "knowing it". :P
