Great Expectations, Nicholas Nickleby, A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist.
What did you think of them?
I liked them, but thought they could have been a heck of a lot shorter, especially NN.
Ah. But the purpose of the question was to find out what people perceive to be "Dickens' novels". You see, I suspect a few of them will be left out. So, which ones?
As well as those previously mentioned, I have heard of/my parents own: A Tale Of Two Cities, The Pickwick Papers, The Old Curiosity Shop, Martin Chuzzlewit, Little Dorrit, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Hard Times, Barnaby Rudge, Dombey and Son, Edwin Drood, Our Mutual Friend. Plus I know he wrote more Christmas Stories and loads of short stories etc.
Hm. He's too wordy (very much of his time, I suppose), but has interesting ideas. I can understand why we still study his books, but I think he's quite boring. </bad English student>
Why do you think he is boring?
Because of the afore-mentioned wordiness. As others have said, he was basically paid by the word and it shows.
Have you seen any film/series versions of Dickens' novels?
Yes, lots.
Which ones? Do you feel like reading the books afterwards? Or do you use them as substitutes?
I've seen various version of A Christmas Carol, of course. Also Great Expectations, Oliver Twist (both the musical and another), Little Dorrit, Martin Chuzzlewit, and Nicholas Nickleby. The last was lovely.
I don't feel like reading Dickens after watching them. As I said before, I don't much like his books.
