I am constructing a course on Dickens, and so started wondering what I could expect people to have read. I would therefore be very happy if you could reply even if you haven't read anything.

A tale of two cities, Nicholas nickleby, a Christmas carol, Martin chuzzlewit, and old curiosity shop

Have you heard of any (other) Dickens novels?

Yeah, most of the major works


Which ones?

great expectations, hard times, Oliver twist, david copperfield

Why have you not read them?

Not enough time/not my type of books.

What is your perception of Dickens?

Great writer, capable of writing in a number of different styles.

Have you seen any film/series versions of Dickens' novels?

Yeah I saw the Disney version of a Christmas carol


Is that the one with Richard E Grant and Patrick Stewart?

Maybe? It's the one with Mickey Mouse and Scrooge McDuck.

Pick one word that you connect with Dickens. What is it?

As a student: verrucous. Dickens' works were generally a chore to read through, but some of his works (e.g., Chuzzlewit, even Nickleby) are actually quite enjoyable. Naturally, they were excluded from every syllabus.
