A great many of those comics I knew, probably because they were adaptations of American comics, some of which were revived when I was growing up, like Flash Gordon.
Perhaps Belgians and Frenchmen of his generation would recognize some of those comics as well, not just Italians. But in the generations since that, the Franco-Belgian comics took off to such an extent that at least here, and I do think in most European countries, American comics (the superhero kind, at least) vanished off the radar, and only reappeared in the last decade or so under the influence of the movies (some of them were present in movie form before that, to be sure, but there was not a soul who read the comics).
The mirror to that is that Franco-Belgian comics are very obscure here, even the most famous ones barely draw attention. It's now the Japanese and the traditional comics houses in the US these days, or so it seems to me.
