Or what any white person experiences while in any country that isn't predominately white. If treated poorly for being white, what should I call that? If it's not racism... This really bothers me, because I'm certainly not trying to claim that white people are running around being racisted every few seconds. I'm just annoyed by the insinuation that racism against whites can't exist.

Yup, that's what I was trying to get across in that fun Twitter episode.

The thing is that I come from a country where there's a separate electoral role based on race, there are separate electorates based on race, there is a national representative rugby team based on race, and a political party based on race. You can CHOOSE to be on all of these if you are Maori - i.e. not White, or Chinese, or Japanese, etc - or you can choose not to be. It's a priviledge that is only extended to one race in that country. And that race isn't the all-powerful White "race".

I think that is really interesting, actually. I didn't realize there was such division.

In part it's tradition so people don't want to get rid of it. I just imagine the fuss if other groups tried it, and thus see the inequality in it all. I'd prefer if we were all treated as New Zealanders, without any separation.

And when I was going to university there were scholarships that I, as a poor citizen of my country, could not apply for because my skin wasn't the right colour.

I experienced that as well, but I had a certain amount of respect for it because of the imbalance of wealth that still exists. Not that I had any of that wealth, but whatever. :P

I think it's damaging. If you want to make sure that poor Maori get assistance then you can make such assistance for ALL poor New Zealanders, not just those of a certain colour. It's good for the country as a whole, and doesn't foster resentment.

It seems that she thinks the whole world is the same, and everyone is the same across all countries.

Basically, she finds it difficult to distinguish between personal and ... "corporate" racism.

Yes. The world is not so black and white, if you'll excuse the pun.

I will, because I was going to use it earlier. :P
