I don't see that The Hunger Games is either ultra-violent or especially controversial. So far the greatest controversy seems to be that Rue and Thresh were black... even though they were described as black in the book.
As for the violence, the fact that it's "YA" because the main characters are teens- don't get me started on that because it's fucking stupid- probably has something to do with that. I thought the movie could have used some more Battle Royale style violence, but of course it has to keep its PG13 rating.
