I dare say you'd be shouting at her to give in already before too long, yes. Legolas Send a noteboard - 14/09/2012 07:33:09 PM
If it had been about sordidly giving into temptation, rather than heroically resisting it, I suspect it would have been much more popular (particularly in France).

Heh. Bit early for that, I think - sure, Rochester was writing poems at that time that were very much about "giving into temptation" (if you haven't read The Imperfect Enjoyment, you so have to, it's fabulous), but that sort of thing didn't exactly turn into bestsellers in the seventeenth century, I don't think. :P

Like I said, my main problem with the novel wasn't the heroically resisting temptation, but rather the shallowness of their love that rather reduced their heroic aspirations. If their feelings for each other had had more depth to them, it would've been more interesting.
Also, I would be willing to consider a French book club selection as long as I already have the book in question (which, for the great authors, is likely). I just want to make sure I finish the Divine Comedy in Italian before the end of the year.

That's good, but then I was already rather counting on that; it's the participation from most people other than those in this thread that I think will be lacking. ;)

Hm. I might give that a try, then, despite being even less of a fan of Le Rouge et le Noir than you. *NM* - 12/09/2012 09:56:50 PM 228 Views
Sounds like you'd be the only one. This review went over like a fart in church. *NM* - 12/09/2012 11:20:23 PM 264 Views

Yeah, my Princess de Clèves review didn't have much success either. *NM* - 13/09/2012 06:48:07 PM 232 Views
I didn't notice that one. Did you post it last week or the week before? - 13/09/2012 07:42:11 PM 549 Views
Two weeks ago, yeah. - 13/09/2012 08:20:45 PM 568 Views
It sounds like an interesting but somewhat dry novel. - 14/09/2012 02:48:10 PM 435 Views
