although admittedly most people didn't much bother to describe the books in question there (the question was just to name their top three books in 2012). Still, might give you some ideas.

And then there was someone else asking about new fantasy series to start not too long ago, here.

And if you like history, you'll see that both Tom and myself just wrote very enthusiastic reviews about two quite different history books, perhaps one of those sounds interesting to you too? In the top three of 2012 post, Tom also mentioned The Proud Tower by Barbara Tuchmann, which is also excellent (basically about Europe in the quarter century before WW1).
