I keep the same types together. That's not genre-filing exactly, but more like reference-y types together, classic types together, modern types together, sci-fi/fantasy/non-normal stuff/etc together.

How do you handle transitions between types?
The idea is that they flow from one section to the next. Sometimes almost jarringly so (ie, I have biblical/qur'an together and fading into questions about religion/science fading into pure science). If the types are too different, they go on a different section of the shelf.

That sounds like what I do.
