You know I directly added almost all of those Wolfe quotes there, right? Larry Send a noteboard - 06/12/2009 05:26:40 AM
Yes, it's very fun to be political with your writings, but it's not anything particularly new. He's just the darling of the spec fic crowd because he's political and New Weird. If there's another reason, I don't see it; his prose is good, but definitely not exceptional, and his plots are nothing compared to Book of the New Sun, at least.

By the way, I'm not sure I ever actually thanked you for getting me to read Book of the New Sun (to be honest, like all other of my favorite reads it's mostly due to WoTmania's Quote of the Moment, but you were the second biggest influence ;). So thanks. :P

Glad to know that you enjoyed Wolfe's masterpiece. I just finished re-reading the second half of it for the fourth time last night. As for Miéville, what does any perceived association with the "New Weird" have to do with anything? That term isn't exactly a defined area, plus Miéville has distanced himself from it. I'd argue that any importance placed on his works deals with a combination of his works capturing a sort of Zeitgeist, as well as the quality of his stories as a whole (I prefer his shorter fiction).
