The Chronicles of Prydain (Lloyd Alexander) and The Chronicles of Narnia (C.S. Lewis) are both good introductions to the genre for pre-pubescent children. But for those around 10-13 I would agree, Eddings is just fine for that age; just as is the Shanarra series, or Piers Anthony's Xanth books. But once the kid matures a bit more, they will probably not be interested. Thats when you hit them with Feist and Tolkien and Jordan. Authors like GRRM and Stephen R. Donaldson should be given to readers of at least 16 years.

Eddings is best, IMO, for young teens (or from the age of 10 or so).

But Magician is a good introduction because it's a) fairly typical fantasy, and b) closer to a "novel" than most.
