Given Rowling's fairly overt Christian influences, I feel like Voldemort being utterly irredeemable would be at odds with the overarching philosophy of Harry Potter. Or to put it another way, Voldemort was only irredeemable because he couldn't love; since change was impossible from within, he couldn't be forgiven.

To put it another other way, I don't think there was a Moral Event Horizon (to quote TVTropes) that he passed. Voldemort's character flaws, and not his actions, are what doomed him.
