Given Rowling's fairly overt Christian influences, I feel like Voldemort being utterly irredeemable would be at odds with the overarching philosophy of Harry Potter. Or to put it another way, Voldemort was only irredeemable because he couldn't love; since change was impossible from within, he couldn't be forgiven.

It's a bit of a moot point because obviously it never would've happened - rather anticlimactic ending to the story that way - but that whole Horcrux deal does have a Moral Event Horizon-feel to it. But whether that is by making him irredeemable, or by illustrating how flawed he is, incapable of love and never going to redeem himself, that's debatable I guess.
