Less words=more cumbersome now? Joel Send a noteboard - 26/04/2010 07:37:41 AM

"Suppose that I like owlbears and you, hobgoblins."

You could be speaking to the hobgoblins.

Diplomacy is an important skill.

I'm sure if I were addressing a group of hobgoblins I'd know it; context is key. However, per my final note, perhaps "Suppose that I like owlbears; you, hobgoblins" should also work without ambiguity.

Not to mention that it is an entirely cumbersome and horrid way to write a sentence when it comes to readability.

Otherwise, what Burr said. The intent is not to list three things the speaker likes, but contrast the preferences of two different people. As noted, the comma is only there to avoid the need to say, "like" twice. The second clause is certainly dependent on the first, but saying "Suppose I like owlbears, you, hobgoblins" raises the ambiguity I referenced (though, of course, the proper way to do that would be "... you and hobgoblins" ) hence the semicolon.

But the intent of eliminating a word was to make things LESS cumbersome, and I think that goal was achieved.

If a comma is appropriate in the original supposition, then the semicolon is necessary here. - 23/04/2010 11:24:20 PM 362 Views
