What exactly is Deputy PM supposed to entail? In here it's a title that's merely added on to a senior government portfolio, but sounds like that wouldn't be the case there - then what will his tasks be?


The Deputy PM is a position you give to someone to keep them out of trouble. Major did it with Heseltine. You also give it to someone so they can act as a peacemaker and go-between. Prescott acted in this role very successfully as a go-between keeping the peace between Blair and Brown.

My guess is that this latter approach is what they have in mind, with Clegg keeping the coalition together when things get rocky and keeping Cameron informed of potential areas that could be problematic.

The Deputy PM role has no powers like the Vice-President in the USA, for example.
