Now they will lose many of their loyal voters (and let's face it, the Lib Dems don't have many casual voters) because they'll be perceived as having "joined the Dark Side". A confidence and supply arrangement would have made them look better – not tarnished with the Tories' decisions but selfless enough to avoid destabilising the country over their disagreements.


They do have casual voters of sorts - tactical voters... can't see many Labour supporters voting for them again though as it is just going to be seen as a vote for the Tories.
Confidence and supply really does seem like it would have been smarter - even formally commit to it for a set period to make it clear they are acting in the country's best interests.

Of course, if the coalition does fall apart, the Lib Dems will get more blame for causing instability than praise for standing up for their principles. Confidence and supply really would have been better for them in the long term, I think.


I think so as well, they are pretty much tied to the Tories now until the next election and having to hope really, really hard that the economy is booming then and they can grab some credit for it.

Speaking of the Dark Side, it seems the Apprentice, Darth Osborne, has finally succeeded the Master, Darth Mandelson. I wonder who the new Apprentice will be.


I wouldn't write of Mandelson yet, I think it is more advantage Osborne than game, set and match.
