What part of my post did you not read...? MalkierKnight Send a noteboard - 05/07/2010 09:01:32 AM
This is not a difficult concept; why are you having so much trouble grasping it?

Look, I'll put it in a list.

1. Tim lives in a place with virtually no public transit.
2. Tim cannot afford a car.
3. The options of transportation are driving, public transit, walking, and bicycling.
4. Walking is unfeasible.
5. Therefore, Tim has to use a bicycle for transport.

I fully intend before the end of this thread to get it into your head that not every place in the world functions like an urbanized American area.

By the way, just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they are "missing the point." Your point may well just be stupid.

...must have been the part where I stated that because Tim told off Aemon's point on account of context, that we should limit this discussion to the context of exercise, as it was for Deadsy.

Since you obviously haven't kept up with the entirety of the thread, you don't know that Deadsy posted the story about cycling at night, I responded saying "Hey you know that's really not smart, day or night, cycling in areas without bike specific infrastructure is foolish." What followed was a series of angry cyclists crying foul over that statement. Therefore, the context of the discussion is a) urban b) exercise. Get it? I've entertained this whole transportation discussion because I don't see it as all that important to the argument, but I honestly haven't been everywhere in the world so I can't fairly say anything about that. But insofar as exercise in urban areas is concerned, I think my points are legitimate.

I fully intend before the end of this thread to prove 2 points:

1) That cycling in urban (therefore typically busy areas) is neither smart nor safe.

2) That while there may be some, even many, occasions where one absolutely NEEDS a bike for transportation, a great majority of people who use it for transportation do so with a viable alternative.

Point number 2 is not really important or relevant to this discussion since, as Tim iterated two or three posts ago, we're limiting this discussion to a certain context.
You must unlearn what you have learned.
