Many objectors simply consider building a mosque near the area were so many were killed by members of that faith to be very, very insensitive. Nothing to do with "Hallowed ground."

This is thinly veiled xenophobia trying to say "we don't want no stinking mosques near here because we blame all Muslims for what a few crazy assholes did."
