I'm not plugged into what people are thinking there, but every poll I've seen about this project (some results in the link below) shows fairly substantial opposition to the project (from New Yorkers and elsewhere). With something as charged as this has become, makes me wonder that there wouldn't be a threat of protests turning nasty or vandalism, etc. placing it this close to ground zero. I (if it was my personal project) would be hesitant to start a project like that where 60-70% of the local people oppose it even being there.
If I'm misunderstanding the feelings of the people in the city (as you and others are telling me I am) then my question/statement really doesn't matter. If no one in New York cares, I wouldn't have concerns from their perspective about putting at that specific site.
Oh, and in your other reply. I didn't mean to suggest that they should avoid building there in fear that the odd madman would do something drastic to the place (whether that nut-job is from NYC or the bible belt), just that there's a chance it could still happen as the debate sinks to new levels and people get more agitated about it.
Hope that made more sense.
