Two hundred yards is nothing. Joel Send a noteboard - 19/08/2010 04:44:34 PM
And what annoys me about the entire business -

Something like 10% of the people killed in the 9/11 attacks were members of the Muslim faith.

What, those roughly 300 people don't count?

This whole debate is BS of the highest order. Cordoba owns the land, has followed all the appropriate laws and can and should do what they want.

They are being reasonably sensitive (althought I get the feeling they're getting tired of it now for which I cannot blame them) and have the support of everyone to whom the concept of 'Freedom of Religion' one of the founding tenants of the United States of America means anything.

There's a Christian church across the street from the WTC site. Should it be razed? Of course not.

The whackjobs who crashed planes into buildings that September morning are just that - whackjobs. They no more represent the majority of their faith, or their nationality, or anything else than Timothy McVeigh represents all Christians or all Americans.

It's stupid and the whiners should shut the fuck up and realize that they are becoming exactly what Al Qaeda accuses them of being and wants them to be.

You know as well as I do that's a clear LOS unless something bigger is in the way. Beside the point though.

This really isn't about Islam, because 911 wasn't about Islam. A lot of people want to keep it that way. The founders of this mosque are supposedly among them, but their actions don't seem to reflect that.

Yes, this is still (theoretically) America and they have every right to do as they wish on their own land in accordance with existing laws. I have the right to beat myself over the head with a frying pan until I fall unconscious, too, but that doesn't make it a good idea.

911 was not and should never be a promotional tool for Islam. I understand the desire to say, "but we're not like them!" yet the fact remains that building an Islamic religious institution right next to where thousands were murdered in the name of Islam is the exact opposite of disassociating 911 from Islam. The Muslims murdered on 911 do have a place, and they do count: As victims, like all the rest; they don't get special status because they just happen to be of the same faith as that professed by the hijackers. That makes the hijackers even more idiotically insane, but it doesn't make the slain Muslims any more (or less) victims than anyone else.
