Nice try, but you will notice that the term "Hell" is entirely absent in the King James version SilverWarder Send a noteboard - 01/09/2010 06:25:12 PM
Hell is definitely there at the culmination of the parable. You'd have to pick a very "interesting" translation to avoid the topic here. ;)

Not at all.

What you are missing is the context. In original Hebrew tradition the wages of sin is death (not hell). The actual term, I believe it is golgotha, does not translate from the Hebrew to 'hell' as Jews don't have that concept. It just means 'dead'. Like I said, Hell is a medieval reference, created to keep serfs happy in their fields and not rising up against their 'betters'.

All the end of that parable is refering to is the angels showing up and killing the sinners in question. That's it. Killing them with flame (a la Sodom and Gomorrah) to be sure, but still, just killing them. Jesus' original audience were Jews, remember, and they did not have, and still do not have, any concept which equates to 'hell'. His audience just heard, loosely transliterated, 'Dad's kick butt lads are going to catch those bastards and burn them alive and OH are they ever going to be sorry!'

We've had a LOT of biblical discussions on this board over the last six or eight years. You'll want to study a lot more carefully before trying to come across as an authority because you will get utterly decimated by the ones who have read the scriptures in their original tongues (no translation required), can speak and read Aramaic, Coptic Greek, Classical Latin and Ancient Egyptian. I'm a piker next to them and they will flay you.

May God stand between you and harm in all the empty places you must walk.
