They may not be world powers, but their teams are good enough that they at least are competitive and would qualify for the tournament on their own.
When the other options for 2022 are Qatar, Japan, and South Korea, then I would say that Australia and the U.S. look great in comparison.
So yeah, while Football may not be the most popular sport in either country by a long shot, it is something that is growing in popularity in both countries, they are safe, won't be 110 degrees during the tournament, and didn't host it in 2002.
