Side rant here.

I remember when I was a kid traveling around Canada or the US, and stopping at the side of the highway at local diners, local hotels, tacky gift shops, etc.

Now when you drive, every exit has the exact same restaurants, the same hotel chains, etc. When I was discussing this with someone they made the same response - consistent experience. You know what a McDonalds is like, you know a Tim Horton, you know a Holiday Inn. There are no surprises, the food is always the same, the rooms similar, it's comforting.

What is the point of going anywhere if everything there is the same as when you left. What is the point of having big box stores, chain bookstores, if everyone carries the exact same material, laid out in the exact same way.

There actually is nothing to experience, explore, discover.
