Interesting how that comparison keeps being made.... Joel Send a noteboard - 28/03/2011 04:26:38 PM
Besides it is much cheaper to clean the pen and feed them for four days. Dog food is pretty cheap and it doesn't really cost that much to have someone come by once and and hose their cage out. I doubt it cost more than $20 total. Everything else involved cost more. Not mention it would inhumane as hell to turn a dog out on the street immediately after surgery. Even if it cost $50 a day to keep the dog you wouldn't save much since you would need to keep the dog until it recoverd.

Of course the entire discussion is rather pointless since the role of animal control is to remove stray animals not just sterilize them and then turn the loose on the streets to roam our neighborhoods. With thinking like this I can see why you became a liberal.

I still don't support it, but calling it "animal control" rather than "the humane society" is at least logical and honest. Calling a warehouse for animals waiting to be killed "the humane society" is like calling death row "the Department of Corrections". Come to think of it....

You're right that it seems necessary to have a staff caring for dogs after surgery, so I guess that cost is present either way (last time I had a dog fixed recovery time was a week, so the expense would increase for "shelters" that kill animals in less than a week and be reduced for those who keep them longer; according to this study strays have eight day for owners to find them before they're even eligible for adoption by others). this shelter quotes $50 a neuter and $60 a spay, so it looks like we got overcharged last time and we're down to whether it costs more than $25 to safely dispose of animals after killing them (except at shelters that keep animals longer than a week, where it's almost certainly cheaper to vaccinate, sterilize and release dogs). I frankly doubt it, so it's essentially a matter of convenience rather than humanity: It's easier to kill animals than to have them roaming the streets. Again, calling that what it is (animal control) is a lot more ethical and moral than calling it "humane".

No doubt, and I respect that; it's tightening the budget by killing animals that bothers me. - 27/03/2011 06:37:17 PM 1133 Views
