Just because you succeeded doesn't mean 1. everyone will and 2. you had it as bad as it could possibly be. I have to say, you were born an american citizen. Could be worse.
I understand, but I disagree.
Well, fair enough. But I look at it this way: I was born poor. My parents work in a barn and no one in my family had completed high school, let alone college. (My mom has since gotten a GED.)
Anyway, I went to college full time and I worked full time. After that, I left a bad situation to make a difference in my life. Just because you're "poor and black" doesn't mean that you don't have choices just like I did. If you want to make a change in your life, do so.
I don't think it's morally justifiable to waste the immense amount of resources necessary to make all shelters no-kill when people are suffering, largely due to situations outside of their control.
I understand, but I disagree.
I was talking about budget shortfalls and not hurricanes, but given the prevalence of the "blame New Orleans" mentality that gets tossed around regarding Katrina, I think it's really important to point out that those who were affected disproportionately represent the class of people who lack the ability to just get up and move somewhere. But they're largely poor and black, so it's a lot easier to laugh at them for being stupid than it is to acknowledge serious systemic issues.
