And yet we seem to agree that college is about education beetnemesis Send a noteboard - 09/04/2011 07:29:31 PM
For million of people sports are a vital part of their college experience but that doesn't mater because it isn't what you think college should be about? I guess we should get rid of music and performing arts since those really are not that much different. Hell lets get rid of hands on art all together.

I don't think colleges should have a damn about giving students some outdated ideal of a "well rounded" education and should just teach them what they need to know.

Everything in this quote is pretty irrelevant to what I've been saying. We're not talking about everyone involved with sports, we're talking about players. Music and performing arts are pretty well enmeshed in "academia," and again, we're not talking about them.

And we're not talking about "well-rounded" education, either. (I don't necessarily disagree with you on that, although I think forcing students to take or place out of some basic composition courses isn't crazy- If you're in college, you should be able to write above an 8th grade reading level, and it's amazing how many people can't).

When I said I don't care, and that schools shouldn't either, I was talking about players wanting to get paid to play sports. If they want to try and become professional athletes, awesome. It shouldn't be a priority of the college to provide its players with a salary.

I wasn't advocating eliminating sports entirely (I played volleyball at college, along with various intramural stuff). I'd definitely be happier if its perceived importance was lessened, but I wouldn't want to eliminate sports.
I amuse myself.
