It's opposition to birth control and sex ed. Dreaded Anomaly Send a noteboard - 26/08/2011 01:06:38 AM
Birth Control & Sex Education, so much as it is opposition to paying for someone else's birth control and how the sex education is conducted?

Note that I'm not speaking of abortion in this post.

I find it....not appropriate...to force me to pay for someone else's birth control measures. Likewise, it is not the state's place to decide how to educate my (future) children in sex. I am going to instruct them in regards to that subject, not just from a fact/procedural aspect, but also with a philosophical belief structure. Many see it as necessary to have both aspects in regards to sex education. Since the state is not capable of teaching those philosophical beliefs on a student by student basis, many individuals believe that an important aspect of sex education is missed.

Yes, I acknowledge the fact that sex education can take place in health class. I also believe that it is appropriate to do so, however that class should not be offered until a later stage in teen development. Prior to that, the parents are in place to provide the basic introduction to the subject.

~Jeordam

I'd rather not pay for someone else's wars, either. Sometimes, our tax dollars go toward things we don't personally like. Either you oppose the entire system of democratic government and social action or you don't, but I don't care about whatever arbitrary standards of "appropriateness" you create to try to legitimize your personal preferences.

It's the state's place to make sure your children have, at the least, the facts regarding sex, just like any other topic. Many parents either don't have those facts or will refuse to provide them to their children. One of those facts is that long-lasting, reliable birth control exists, and will soon be free thanks to the PPACA. You can teach your children whatever "philosophical belief" about it that you want, but that doesn't change the reality.

As far as the timing of it, some students are becoming sexually active in middle school these days, with or without sex ed giving them a clear picture of reality. Holding it back just increases the chances of detrimental results.

All that is secondary to the point that Republicans and social conservatives have tried to eliminate real sex ed entirely and to paint birth control as ineffective.
