It may seem more strange to you since Mormonism is a recent development less than 200 years ago, but Islam is a similar "crazy" jump from other monotheistic religions when Islam was founded 1400 years ago. What is crazy to you is all relative.

Furthermore the same argument can be made about Christianity from Judaism 2000 years ago.
