I think you are looking at the issue back wards. It isn't that America is suddenly becoming religious it is that Europe and parts of the American left have become vehemently anti-religious and in their unending need to to prove they are victims they need a bogeyman. I think the radicalization of the new religion of atheism is more worrisome.
