There are several polls on religion and a quick look shows that there is a rise in the belief the religion plays to much of a role and and decrease in the number of people strong religious identity. Church attendance is down even though the economy is crap. I think that shows us that while religion is still important in the US despite the hand wringing it is actually decreasing in importance.
